Dream House, a 501(c) 3 organization incorporated in 2001, was created to address the special life care needs of children who, because or an accident, illness, congenital disorder, abuse or neglect, has been left in a stable condition but dependent on life sustaining medications, treatments, equipment and the need for assistance with activities of daily living. These children with special health care needs are often abandoned or taken away from their families when appropriate care cannot be provided. When placed in state custody, they spend many months and years moving from foster home to hospital to senior adult nursing homes, because Georgia has no organized program in place to meet the special needs of these children or the families that care for them. This situation further deteriorates the physical, mental and emotional health of these already fragile children, creating an even greater health care need.  Families can be destroyed, children are at greater risk for fatal outcomes and millions of healthcare dollars are wasted.

Advances in medical technology are keeping many babies alive when just a decade ago, they would not have lived through a premature delivery, a birth defect or other trauma.  Sadly, a system to support that child, who because of medical intervention is destined to live a life dependent upon constant medical care, is practically non-existent.  Many families cannot absorb the added responsibilities and pressure to take care of the child and hurt or neglect them.   These children have had their lives saved, but only to live in some of the worst circumstances we can fathom. They are left to languish in hospitals, nursing homes and institutions, without a family to nurture them.  And this costs the community at-large millions of dollars each year.

Dream House for Medically Fragile Children offers a solution.  By generating new and unique ideas and programs, forming creative partnerships, utilizing existing resources in new and creative modes, there can be a tremendously positive impact in the quality of life for our children, our families, and our communities.  Dream House for Medically Fragile Children, Inc. seeks to provide the quality of life these special children deserve by providing them with a home, a family and a future. The impact will be significant:  improved physical, mental and emotional health, less need for healthcare provider interventions, reduced healthcare costs, increased productivity and quality of life, less burden on local and state resources and money saved by governmental and health care organizations.

The Dream House for Medically Fragile Children, Inc. is committed to increase opportunities for medically fragile children to live in a stable, permanent home environment through the development of support resources and programs which increase the number of families and communities to care for them:  Providing educational programs and unique teaching environments for families and care givers; Assisting in the development of specially equipped and accessible homes; Increasing community awareness about the lives and needs of medically fragile children; Creating opportunities for community and corporate partnerships focused on improving the quality of life for medically fragile children.

Honduras Outreach is a non-denomination, Christian organization dedicated to building life-changing relationships between the people of the Olancho province of Honduras and caring North Americans. Rancho el Paraiso is the focal point of the Honduras Outreach ministry and is located in the department of Olancho in central Honduras.

Nearly every week during the year, we arrange for groups of volunteers from the United States to travel to Rancho el Pariaso, our ranch in the Agalta Valley of Central Honduras. From that base, the North Americans work side-by-side with Hondurans from nearby villages on community projects that range from replacing earthen floors with cement to helping establish schools, medical clinics and public health facilities.

The first adult group to travel to Rancho el Paraiso, consisted of 35 volunteers. That was in 1990. Sixteen years later, we annually host over 50 groups comprised of more than 1100 volunteers. Over the years, HOI’s unique partnership between the volunteers from the US and villagers in the Agalta Valley of Honduras have created:

  • Schools – 40 kindergartens, one elementary school and one middle school. Were it not for our programs, there would be just one kindergarten in the entire district.
  • Libraries – Two permanent buildings and nine mobile units. Volunteers buy Spanish-language books, providing opportunities for reading at home that did not exist in these villages.
  • Public Health Systems – Four clinics and a children’s vaccination program. Before  we arrived in 1990, the vaccination rate for children in the valley was 15%. Now it is 100%.
  • Spiritual Leadership Opportunities – Our Louise Mahaffey Bible Training Center trains Honduran faith leaders in a 10 month, non-denominational, pastoral program in an effort to help them become better spiritual guides to their communities.

Besides these larger projects, the mission teams working with the villagers have made countless improvements in villager’s homes, from laying down new cement floors to building sanitation and ventilation systems. Groups and individual volunteers have funded scholarships for more than 160 high school students and assisted more than 60 others to graduate from vocational schools. Fees paid by groups for their week in Honduras help us staff and maintain the outreach base for our seven programs (Spiritual Development; Health & Medical Services; Education; Agriculture; Commerce; Model Village; and Groups).
